What if?
Martin over at d2 mentioned the following in a comment on one of his posts, I'm a capitalist pig, but I think his thinking rocks:
| "I just have this whack concept of a world full of individual experts, each latching onto a project where their skills are needed, as required. No fixed "positions", no "job security", but a completely self-regulating system. Each individual (registered on a decentralised database, ie The Internet) is ranked according to the experiences others have had with them. Each project has a "team leader" (filled obviously by a project manager), and people move freely between what they do according to what they're good at, and what they're interested in." |
Shit, you could argue the feasbility, but then again, any great concept can be shot down on feasability.
It's food for thought...!

I was involved in a social experiment some years ago called "Yeoville LETS", back in the day when Yeoville rocked.
The LETS system stands for, amongst other things, "Local Energy Transfer Scheme".
Look L.E.T.S. up on Google, and you'll see that there are several successful implementations of it in Australia.
It's essentially a skills pool, where all members barter their skills within the system. So, say I'm a copywriter (I'm an EX copywriter now). And you're a plumber. You need a copywriter. I do a little campaign for you. Let's say it costs you 1000 LETS units.
You "owe" the system 1000 LETS.
The system "gives" me 1000 LETS.
I can spend those LETS any way I want.
And you have to "pay" your LETS back to the system in plumbing services.
So, if it's a massage I want, I go and spend 150 LETS on a massage. And maybe I DO need a plumber at some point. I spend LETS credits on the plumber.
The system in Yeoville broke down because there weren't enough people in the skills pool. Not enough diversity. But the ones in Asutralia worked because the communities were huge, and there were PLENTY of skills, and everyone benefited.
This stuff CAN and DOES work. It's not Utopia either. It's real. But it does require hardcore organisational thinking to drive it.
Blue skies
love
Roy

Oh yeah... check out a book called FUNNY MONEY. It's a neat analysis of alternative currencies and barter systemes around the world.

Now you're talking alternative economic systems here...
Something like LETS does seem like a good idea, the only problem is that (as you say) you really do need large-scale adoption of it to make it work. Economic systems (in most cases anyway) only really work when the variables involved have enough of a spread to statistically ensure fair averages.
No person is an island (which was my original intention with the comment Rich quoted), but also, no economic system is an island. Tell Mr Mugabe that...
Let me rather keep quiet before I contradict myself or get reprimanded by someone who's actually an economist !

LOL, you're alright Martin, I don't think there are too many econimists reading "hello_world"
...
Yet...!

Experts Exchange works just like this - last I heard they we're going commercial and contemplating selling of 'LETS' or 'beans' or whatever they call them. I wonder if one can earn interest on accumulated credits - whole new world of forward options to be explored...
