Hopeful, but not convinced
The title sums up my initial feelings re the "More Space Project - what happens if you give bloggers more space". There are a few reasons for this, firstly, to quote the project's blog FAQ:
| One constraint with blogging is space. A typical entry can't normally go longer than 500 words without losing the reader attention. |
The problem isn't space at all, you have all the space you want, the problem is simply:
(blog) content > attention (time) available
As such, I don't see how essays are going to help, I still have about 10 Change This manifestos (essays?) that I've downloaded and not yet had a chance to read (I read a lot, and I've just had a 20 day holiday too).
Which brings me to another point from the FAQ:
| Finally, we want to see if bloggers can develop projects to make money. |
Eh? But this isn't blogging, it's just writing, and people have been getting this right for some time now. As for seeing if a blogger i.e. a person that blogs, can develop essentially unrelated projects that make money... I already have
I said I'm hopeful though, that's because of the inclusion of audio formats (which I will listen too) and a printed book (which I'll buy if what I hear is worthwhile).
Good luck guys, we'll be watching...!
Ps. 10 000 words is about 50 times the length of this post, got the time/attention/inclination?

Yep, if it's in hardcopy. I rarely read that much in electronic format though.

Hi Rich, Good questions and I welcome your skepticism. Which is the real sort, as in: I'm not sure, let's investigate.
I see vast quantities of overwhelm online already, it'll be interesting to see if what we collectively produce can somehow rise above it, though of course we may just add to it.
I have to say that the process itself, figuring out how 10 bloggers, typically independent-minded, can collaborate interests me.
As ever, stuff will happen and meanings will be made.
I look forward to your hopeful/unconvinced take on it all as it unfolds!

Jeremy, even in hardcopy though, you'd want to know what you were in for. I beleive there needs to be a thread i.e.
10 bloggers each take a unique stance on the issue of famine in Africa.
Of course you would want a businesss related thread, but a common thread would be nice, it would also give the project longevity, as future editions explore more topics.
I also really like the fact that it would be hearing different people's perspectives on the same topic, thus it would be one part collaberation, one part debate - now that's extended blogging.
The thought of essentially random essays just isn't grabbing me.
Johnnie, since writting this post I've become more excited by More Space, not neccesarily less skeptical, but definatley more intrigued, I've also been giving the problems that I see the project has more thought (the basic result is outlined above).
Still watching, still hopefull...!
