Don't succumb to the dark slide
In "The art of the start" by Guy Kawasaki (a book that I'm absolutely loving btw.). Guy says the following:
| USE A DARK BACKGROUND. A dark background communicates seriousness and substance. A white or light background looks cheap or amateurish. Also, staring at a harsh, white presentation for forty-five minutes gets tiring for the eyes. Think about this: Have you ever seen movie credits that use black slides on a white background? |
Wow, what rubbish.
- A light background is fresh and clear. Think Apple
- If you are staring at the screen for 45-minutes, there are bigger problems than the background colour. You should be staring at the speaker for 40, and the slides for 5.
- The movie credits analogy is daft. It's flawed in that it's hardly a great example of something captivating, how many of you actually stay for the credits?
- However, if he is correct, and if he truly believes it why is his book black text on white, and more to the point, his website?
He goes on to say "put your logo on every slide". You know my feelings on this.

Yo Rich...!
Damn right about the slides. Movies versus presentation audiences?? Nah! One's captive, the other's voluntary. Gotta treat your volunteers with respect.
But there are two other Kawasaki books that are absolute must-haves on any business book shelf.
One is RULES FOR REVOLUTIONARIES.
The other is SELLING THE DREAM, the guide he wrote after being given the job title "Evangelist" for the Apple corporation.
Blue skies

Yeah, I want to get his other books, am really enjoying this one. The Rules for Revolutionaries video clip on his site is well worth a look too...!

Of course this is complete and utter bollocks.
The way I see this is that you'll find these books filled with fundamentalist ideas, this is how they sell themselves. If they said "dark or light background, both have their benefits, you choose" nobody would buy the godamn thing. They need to say "A is great, B is crap", nobody likes grey areas.
Similarily, Seth Godin analyses sites with this mentality in his book "The Big Red Fez" -- this kind of generalisation makes me cringe. "Flash is bad, HTML is good!" -- Annoying, especially as I otherwise completely agree with these guys.

Haha, yeah me too, funny thing is, it's the books that I find things I passionatley disagree with that I often enjoy the most. At least they get me thinking...!
