The future is catching up with us
It's amazing to live in a world where you can read about a prediction of the future, think to yourself how bloody cool that would be, and then you read a couple lines down and find that it actually does exist. I just love how rapidly technology seems to be advancing everyday.
Just recently I've tried out GoogleEarth (simply amazing), put videos on my PSP, listened to podcasts using my iPod through my car stereo and played quake against an actual live robot running around... OK I didn't actually do the last one, but I'm dreaming of it. But when I tell/show my parents or parents in law, it completely floors them. Most people (at least here in SA) don't know about half of the stuff us geeks do. It is truly amazing to think that now people can be arrested (via Smart Mobs) for mugging people in online games. In the U.S. the cable companies are bundling VoIP in their packages and it seems that in the United States' not to distant future there will be more VoIP users than traditional phone network users. The race to the petaflop (a machine capable of 1 000 trillion mathematical operations a second) is also on, and they have created a robot that can jump to it's feet. There is so much to look forward to... I love it!

Do yourself a favour and have a read here.
And for some laughs have a look at the funniest engadget post ever (it helps to know what a BBS is).

I was thinking exactly the same thing the other day, while remote controlling a webserver through an ActiveX webpage, this webserver being one of 4 virtual servers running on the same physical machine in the room next to me, and my desktop view of this server also being via remote control from my laptop, which is connected via WiFi to the rest of our network, which is connected via wireless to our ISP's datacentre, which is... Phew... It's tiring thinking about it!
But all that stuff, however cool, doesn't come close to the amazingness of how easy it is to speak to (and see) someone on different continent, almost instantaneuously. Tech rules!

Interstingly I was just discussing gadgets/technology with a co-worker yesterday and he said that all in all things didn't really "work" seamlessly enough to really make your life better. Too much messing about with settings, etc...
As a geek I personally like messing about and setting stuff up but I feel that, especially in the last 3 or so years, things have been becoming increasingly simpler to setup. On a recent trip to Paris I was taking 100 snaps a day and porting them in seconds into my notebook through Picassa, no learning curve, no messing about. I setup photo blogging from my mobile phone in 5 minutes. People that previously had one underused computer now have WiFi and watch movie trailers from their gardens. Grandmothers print digital pictures through automated kiosks at pharmacies, etc...
The real revolution is how seamless and simple everything is becoming. This makes the take-up more attractive and technology more ubiquitous which in turn is better for us tech lovers because it accelerates development, lowers prices, etc... It's great.
